Martin House

Hanmer Springs
Go Back

Gavin Martin approached me spring 2017 for a new home in Hanmer Springs, the large section was high above the town and bordered on the east side of Conical Hill reserve. With a limited budget we settled on a 2 bedroom house with single garage large enough for Gavin's Hilux truck.

The site was moderately steep and with rocky ground and adjacent to an existing council access way. Earthworks for a Maxraft slab proved too extensive so we opted for a standard masonry foundation with header blocks to avoid formwork. A major design brief item was the ability to see the views from North to east and to the south over the town; my solution was to arrange the Living room out on the east end with glazing on three sides. Open plan kitchen and dining spaces also allowed views north, south and east from the dining space. This all fulfilled the brief that previous designs from others had failed to do. Only the Living room has an exposed concrete floor for thermal mass, making this home partially heated by passive solar gain; a good log burner will provide backup heating with a ceiling mounted HWC connected to a wetback.
