A Solabode Mk2 in Rangiora
Go Back

A young family in Rangiora approached me with interest in a simple passive solar home for their flat lifestyle block on the banks of the Cust River. They liked my modular Solabode Mk2 designs and after some plan adjustments to suit their requirements we finished with a 3 bedroom plus study with attached double garage and large workshop. The clients preferred a tall steep pitch roof style building with vertical board and batten cladding, the dual-pavilion nature of the building worked well with those choices. Truss roof structures are the cheapest but a 2.7m stud height in all the main open plan living spaces provides relief and volume without much extra cost. This higher ceiling also allows for taller glazing units on the north side to provide the essential solar gain for this energy efficient home. The 100% fully insulated Maxraft exposed concrete slab floor coupled with full levels of Terralana wool insulation ensures comfort even on cloudy Canterbury days.
