Williams Coston House

Pukeiti, Mt Taranaki
Go Back

A couple in New Plymouth asked me to design them a modest passive solar home at their bush clad lot at Pukeiti on the north slopes of Mt Taranaki; a nicely elevated site with great views of New Plymouth's Paritutu Rock and big chimney stack at Port Taranaki as well as the rugged Kaitake range and Tasman Sea beyond.

The client's had their own concept design already well developed using free 3D software, so it was an easy task to develop their ideas into a practical working house design. The north facing site is perfectly set up for both solar gain and the best views so getting both aspects in all main spaces and bedrooms was simple. The main space is double height under a steeper pitched roof and features a half width loft floor with its own spectacular view through the high gable end windows. A Maxraft floor and foundation system was used on the levelled site for 100% isolation from cold ground. 140mm thick exterior walls are filled with Terralana wool insulation while R4.0 to R4.5 wool insulation keeps the roof from losing heat. Cladding is a mix of TrueOak corrugated steel and stained, locally grown macrocarpa weatherboards.
